I just did the caravan toss in the second tourney, I still have one turn left...BUT before I take it, how can my score ever count if I all ready am top scorer...this time I came damn close to it...Should I just not bother???

Here's how I believe it works. I may be wrong.
The message you get when your score is submitted:

Is the same as when you play the game regular (not in a tournament). Your high scores and monthly high scores are recorded as usual.
When playing a tournament the score is also recorded to a separate table in the database. The tournament score and standings are stored and processed in a way that we can't see. We don't seem to have access to the tournament scores or standings.
Although your score did not beat your all-time high, it could still be high for the tournament. And when looking at the tournament page, I do indeed see that you have the highest score.
